Beach Music Bio's
Tommy Black and Blooz
A Beach Boogie & Blues Band

A Little Bit About Tommy Black:

Tommy Black is a singer, songwriter, and entertainer from Fayetteville, NC. Not only does Tommy sing and entertain with the best, he also writes and produces his own music. His vocal ability is evident in his first CD "Do It At The Beach." This CD is a mixture of Beach Boogie and Blues, Island Music, and Happy Songs of the Heart. All songs on this CD were written by Tommy, and it is a CD you will thoroughly enjoy - guaranteed.

Tommy's CD "Do It At The Beach" caught the ear of General Johnson and Jerry Goodman of Surfside Records, a Beach Music Record Label. Tommy is now a recording artist with Surfside Records and is currently in the process of releasing his new CD with Surfside. He has written 12 new songs for the CD, and it is complete. His first single from the album is called "Sabrina" and is currently on the Beach Music charts. A second single will be released called "Beach Boogie DJ" in February, and his complete album will be released in March of this year.

Tommy is at home with a microphone in his hand and an audience to entertain. With his wireless mic, you might find him at a table singing to the ladies or doing a harmonica solo in the middle of the dance floor.

Tommy loves to entertain and it shows when "Tommy Black and Blooz" do their floorshow. The floorshow consists of a Tribute to Elvis Presley, the Bee Gees, Willie Nelson, Frankie Valley, and many more.

BILLY STEWART
Billy Stewart was a great artist. He had a very unique voice, and seemed to enjoy performing live. I only saw him perform a couple of times, but will never forget them.
The first time was the summer of 68 at Myrtle Beach, not at the Beach Club where most of the hot Beach acts were, but at the Whispering Pines. While the Beach Club was booking The Tams, The Drifters, Marice Williams,The Profits, and other great acts, there was a guy by the name of Hook Anderson that had a club in the black section of town call the Whispering Pines. Hook booked Billy Stewart in the summer of 1968(it may have been 69), and advertise it on WTGR radio. As a white kid growing up at the Beach I was familiar with the Whispering Pines, and made several ventures to "the Hill" after hour, but this was different, this was big. Myrtle Beach was pretty segregated in 1968. Well the night when Billy Stewart was scheduled to be there, my date and I showed up expecting to see a few white couples mixed in the crowd, but man were we surprised. The place was packed, and in the middle of this segregated period in our history, the crowd was about 50% white.
Billy Stewart was dressed in all white, and had to be helped up the 3 very steep steps to the stage. The "Fat Boy" put on one hell of a show, and it's one of the memories I'll never forget.
A coupe of years later while going to Carolina in Columbia I was at a club call Jack's Palace waiting for the great Billy Stewart to come on stage. An announcement was made that the performance had been cancelled because Billy was involved in a wreck somewhere in North Carolina on !-95. Unfortunately Billy died that night in 1970. That was another memory I'll never forget.

THE EMBERS

 -Calendar of Events-
Greenville, NC:

The Carolina Pepsi Bottlers are pleased to announce they have entered into a “presenting sponsorship” agreement with the Carolina Beach Music band, The Embers, known as the “heart and soul of beach music”. The agreement means that Pepsi will be recognized by the band as the “presenting sponsor” of their 200 + appearance dates in 2003, playing in locations throughout the eastern United States from New York to Florida. Pepsi will also be assisting in the artwork design of the 40’ trailer used by the band to transport their musical and stage equipment.

According to Pepsi spokesperson, Jeff Minges, President of The Minges Bottling Group serving eastern NC, “Pepsi is excited to be involved with a group like The Embers. For all of us who are familiar with the Beach Music tradition of the Carolinas, there is no better spokesperson for this music than The Embers. Pepsi started here in the Carolinas, and who better to represent our flagship brand, than a group like The Embers, who has its musical roots here as well.”

Pepsi Cola was created in New Bern, NC in 1898, by a local pharmacist named Caleb Bradham. The Embers began performing in 1958 as a local beach band in Raleigh, NC, later owning clubs in Raleigh and Atlantic Beach, NC.

Pepsi is in the planning stages for regional marketing programs involving The Embers, with concepts including commercials, consumer promotions, and CD’s. Full details will be announced in the coming months.

The Embers are currently working on a new CD, “Beach Music Super Collaboration” for a major international release on the Bluewater Recordings label. The CD is being produced by New York record producer, Charles Wallert, and will include compositions by Wallert (“Brenda”) and multi-grammy nominee Jimmy George (I’ll Always Love You,” “Just to See Her”). There will be guest appearances on the CD by George Benson and other recording artists. Wallert has produced for nationally known artists such as George Benson, O.C. Smith, The Main Ingredient, and Dionne Warwick. Renowned artist, Wayland H. Cato 111, of Charlotte NC, has designed the CD cover artwork.

"Frankly I have been listening to 94.9 The Surf on the web until they went to paid listening. So I decided to take a few minutes to do a web serach for maybe some more beach music on the web. Got to your site via Wille C's site refering me to your show. I live in Smithfield, N.C. The show seems fine to me, of course I have not listened enough to make a fair opinion. The music is good and seems to me to be a strong clear stream with good stereo seperation on my end with a 56k modem. Much better audio quality then 94.9. I do like the few words you have prior to some songs giving a little history and info about the music. Hope this is a success for you and I will keep listening. As I listen more I will let you know any other thoughts."

"For many stations, there's broadcast existence, rather than broadcast excellence...that's what separates Pat Gwinn from the crowd."

 Ray Hudson, Myrtle Beach

"Pat Gwinn At The Beach is one of the most consistent, fun, enjoyable, smooth and professional beach music radio shows I have ever heard."
